At TrinityLaban

I just had the pleasure to spend 5 weeks with 17 graduating dance students at TrinityLaban! We created a short work entitled Tatjana. Bettina John designed our costume and Louise Miriam Hynes the lighting.

The work was performed at Laban Theatre on 2nd and 3rd July alonside the other commissioned works created by Matthias Sperling, Marie Rotie, Charles Linehan and Lea Anderson.

Family Portrait

In April and May 2015 Juan José Guerra-Valiente and me have been working with families living in Westminster. We have created a series of portraits combining drawing and movement. The project was generously supported by Westminster Adult Education Service and the Arts Council England. Have a look here at our workshop documentation.

About this blog

My work explores the expressive potential of the individual body's movement. It is driven by the desire to understand more of each other's physicality and to recognise an element of oneself in the other. Collaboration is at the centre of my process.

In Tracing Gestures individual performers document their own and each other's movement and physicality through the use of visual media. The focus is on process and continuous experimentation. Studio-based explorations with different groups of artists have over time led to a series of distinct performances, each shaped by the specific collaborations and contexts that they are presented in.

In Tracing Gestures 1 (2014) I collaborated with dance artist Richard Court, multimedia artist Mamoru Iriguchi, and sculptor Sophia Clist, which was performed in London at Chisenhale Dance Space in June 2014.

Tracing Gestures 2 (2016) was created in collaboration with dance artists Stephen Moynihan, Aaron Markwell and Richard Court; with work-in-progress sharing in London at Touch Wood at The Place and at Dance 4 in Nottingham, and a full-length performance at the Jerwood Dance House at DanceEast in Ipswich.

Tracing Gestures 3 (2017) was re-imagined as a site-sensitive adaptation in collaboration with performers Owen Ridley DeMonick, Jack Sergison, Stephen Moynihan and Richard Court, with visual artist Juan Guerra and lighting designer Jackie Shemesh. The work will be created through a third research block in 2016-17, commissioned by the The TrinityLaban and Greenwich Dance partnership. It premiered at the Borough Hall at Greenwich Dance.

Education and participation projects in community, vocational training and professional development settings continue to accompany and feed into this process, during which we are joined by fine artist Juan Guerra. Projects have been supported by TrinityLaban, Danceeast, University of Suffolk, the William Morris Gallery and The Showroom.
